The Gent–McWilliams parameterization: 20/20 hindsight

چکیده
It has now been 20 years since the Gent and McWilliams paper on ‘‘Isopycnal Mixing in Ocean Circulation Models” was published in January 1990 issue of the Journal of Physical Oceanography. That paper was highlighted at the CLIVAR Working Group on Ocean Model Development ‘‘Workshop on Ocean Mesoscale Eddies” which was held at the UK Meteorological Office in April 2009, and this review paper is based on the talk given at that Workshop. It contains some hindsights on how the parameterization of the effect of mesoscale eddies on the mean flow came about; which is a question that I am asked quite often. A few important results from including the parameterization in a non-eddy-resolving ocean model are recalled. Including this parameterization, along with other improvements to all the components, in the first version of the Community Climate System Model resulted in the first non-drifting control simulation in a climate model that did not require flux corrections. Also included are brief comments on how the Gent and McWilliams eddy parameterization has been modified and improved since the original proposal in

Stochastic superparameterization in a quasigeostrophic model of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current
Stochastic superparameterization, a stochastic parameterization framework based on a multiscale formalism, is developed for mesoscale eddy parameterization in coarse-resolution ocean modeling. The framework of stochastic superparameterization is reviewed and several configurations are implemented and tested in a quasigeostrophic channel model – an idealized representation of the Antarctic Circu...
متن کاملSensitivity of primary production to different eddy parameterizations: A case study of the spring bloom development in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea
The abilities of the Gent and McWilliams (1990) (GM) and Horizontal Diffusion (HD) eddyparameterizations to represent the mesoscale effects relevant for primary production are compared and analyzed. Following Lévy et al. (1999a), this is done in the case study of the spring bloom that follows the formation of a dense water patch in the northwesternMediterraneanSea. It is shown that, unlike HD, ...
متن کاملEmergent eddy saturation from an energy constrained eddy parameterisation
The large-scale features of the global ocean circulation and the sensitivity of these features with respect to forcing changes are critically dependent upon the influence of the mesoscale eddy field. One such feature, observed in numerical simulations whereby the mesoscale eddy field is at least partially resolved, is the phenomenon of eddy saturation, where the time-mean circumpolar transport ...
متن کاملOn Antarctic Intermediate Water Mass Formation in Ocean General Circulation Models
Antarctic Intermediate Water is formed at the high mid-latitudes of the Southern Ocean. In many ocean general circulation model simulations with coarse resolution and a z-coordinate, a mid-depth salinity minimum characteristic of this intermediate water is reproduced. However, for the real ocean it remains unclear which are the dominant processes in the formation of this water mass and which ar...
متن کاملRepresenting the effects of mesoscale eddies in coarse-resolution ocean models
Mesoscale eddies in the ocean mix fluid parcels in a way that is highly constrained by the stratified nature of the fluid—so much so that much of our intuition about ocean mixing comes from thinking in density coordinates. Temporal-residual-mean (TRM) theory provides the link between the different views that are apparent from averaging turbulent flow in height coordinates and in density coordin...
